Another highlight of this new Canon PowerShot S5 IS is its large 2.5-inch steerable LCD screen, which has also been enhanced in resolution, additional shooting modes, and a variety of video recording options. The camera's compact design incorporates a new accessory shoe with sync contacts for accessory flashes that ensure Canon PowerShot S5 IS compatibility with a selection of Canon Speedlite EX external flash units. These flashes are added to the list of other accessories available, which includes wide-angle optical and TV complements and windshields.
Optional wide-angle and tele-optics complements allow you to reach focal lengths of up to 27mm in wide-angle and 648mm in super-TV (24x36 equivalent). A Super Macro mode for shooting at 0 cm from the subject and the 500D (58 mm) lens available as an option open access to the world of ultra-detailed macro photography. With the secure digital zoom, the user can benefit from a wider zoom range without digital interpolation that can reduce image quality. Thus, it is possible to photograph with a maximum zoom factor of 24x and the guarantee of a resolution adapted to the printing of prints in postcard format (10 x 15 cm). The photographer can also activate the digital teleconverter to increase the telephoto shooting potential (1.6x or 2x) without the constraint of the aperture reduction inherent to the optical converters.
The Canon DIGIC III processor provides several new features that make getting better photos easier. Face Detection AF/AE/AE automatically detects up to nine faces in the frame and optimizes the focus, exposure, and flash output accordingly. The system is characterized by its high accuracy, even for shooting large groups of people or when the characters are distant or move in the frame. The Face Detection AF/AE mode of the Canon PowerShot S5 IS can also be activated during movie shooting, with the focus and exposure being continuously adjusted for people in motion. This technology is based on hardware and not software and runs at the same speed as Canon's standard Ai-AF autofocus.
In addition to the built-in red-eye reduction system, the Canon PowerShot S5 IS also offers red-eye correction for newly recorded photos, eliminating the need for retouching on a computer after shooting. When enabled in playback mode, this software-based red-eye correction uses face detection technology to analyze the selected image and automatically remove any detected red-eye cases. The user can also make these corrections manually. Canon has considered the PowerShot S5 IS a larger LCD (2.5 inches instead of 2 inches) and a higher resolution (207,000 pixels). This LCD monitor can be rotated in any direction and allows you to frame from unusual viewing angles, such as holding the camera at the waist level or overhead.
The best performance in low light conditions with high ISO settings (up to ISO 1600) is guaranteed by the combination of optical image stabilization and advanced DIGIC III noise reduction technology. A new automatic ISO shift function prevents camera shake by offering the user the option to immediately increase the ISO speed and therefore the speed by simply pressing a button as soon as the camera signals that there is a risk of instability and therefore of motion blur. When the user wants to shoot with a flash, the new accessory shoe with flash sync contacts allows you to mount a Speedlite EX external flash or use a slave flash to create natural or creative lighting effects.
